About Us

Anyone who has made the trip to Chicago can attest to all of the great things our neighbor to the north has to offer. However, when it comes to food in the Windy City, the first culinary treat that comes to mind is the Chicago-style hotdog. This delicious delicacy has many a St. Louisan drooling and begging for more of the delightful dog.

So what does one do when a trip to Chicago just isn't feasible? Hazelwood, meet your new savior: Angelo's Chicago Taste. Located on Lindbergh Boulevard in the heart of Hazelwood, this local hot spot has been serving up food for quite some time. The local eatery is highly regarded for its variety of gyros, sandwiches, and of course, hotdogs. Stop by during any weekday lunch rush, and you're sure to find a loyal group of hungry locals begging for a taste of Chicago.

The place itself is simple; the walls are spotted with a few paintings along with Chicago memorabilia, but are otherwise bare. A small "Letters to God" box invites patrons to jot down hopes, wishes, and prayers to the deity. This plain, no-frills atmosphere allows the spotlight to shine on what really matters: the food.

The menu is varied, offering everything from tacos, burgers and even baklava. The plethora of items is enough to make any foodie blush with anticipation. Despite the large (and sometimes extravagant) offerings, the prices remain low enough to satisfy those on a budget.

Although Angelo's is primarily known for hotdogs, the most popular item on the menu is the gyro at $5.86. Two varieties are offered: chicken and a beef/lamb combo. I went with the more traditional beef/lamb option.

The gyro was everything one could hope for in a sandwich—a soft, white pita topped with plenty of tangy tsaziki sauce and then finished with a mountain of beef. The delicate, hearty array of flavors was perfectly executed.

I also tried Angelo's take on the Chicago style hotdog which runs $2.39. This beauty is about as close as you're going to get to the real thing without hopping on the next flight to Chicago. The juicy red hot Chicago beef was settled into a warm soft bun, and contained all of the traditional Chicago dog toppings, right down to the neon-green pickle relish.

Angelo's Chicago Taste is open for lunch and dinner Mon. - Sat., 10a.m. - 8p.m. Next time the craving for a taste of Chicago hits, be sure to give Angelo's Chicago Taste a try.
