Hail Storms 4/5/10
Severe stormes damage over 50,000 homes in the Chicagland area

The New Trend in Roofing 2010
With wildfires, hurricanes, and hail damaging houses, an increasing number of homeowners are taking advantage of metal roofing.

Choosing the right roof for you!

When its time to replace or repair a roof most homeowners desire a roof that is not too expensive, requires no maintenance and lasts forever. Seems like this should be a simple choice, right? Wrong, with all of the improvements in roofing materials one can become confused by all of the conflicting information available.

An average roof is replaced or repaired in as little as 8 to 10 years. Therefore, it is critical to choose the right roofing material for your home in order to avoid unexpected maintenance costs and to reduce the chance of needing to replace your roof sooner than one should. At CD Strong we will find the material that suits your needs and budget.

Composition shingles

Composition shinglesare the most common roofing material in North America. They are commonly made of either fiberglass or recycled paper based products mixed with asphalt, which is then covered with coloured mineral granules.??While they have a low installation cost, composition shingles will usually protect your home for about 10-15 years.

Some composition roofs require maintenance or repair in as little as 8 years.??This material can be easily damaged by high winds, causing the shingles to blow off. High heat, heavy rains and other weather factors can cause curling, cracking and streaking of the shingles, which deteriorates your roof’s appearance and effectiveness.

Hail damage to roofs vs. shingle wear.

Hail-damaged roof shingles show more of a scoured effect in which larger, more irregularly shaped areas of shingle surface have lost granules. Worn or weathered asphalt roof shingles if inspected early enough in the course of normal aging and wear cycle may show small areas of granule loss, starting with “bald” areas, or micro-spots, which are typically the diameter of a few mineral granules. Accelerated by sun and weather wear, these “bald” spots will have developed over time as opposed to having developed suddenly during a storm.

Inspect your roof as soon as possible after any storm.
Inspect your roof regularly, ideally annually, so that any damage can be identified and resolved before amassing into a more costly leak. Inspecting your roof regularly enables you to document damage when it occurs so that you can compare the condition of the roof, damage that was or was not present, before and after a specific storm. Inspect your roof promptly after a storm.

Storm damage will most likely affect differing roof slopes in dissimilar ways, as each roofs’ weather exposure varies. Look at the uniformity of roof defects.
The uniformity of roof imperfections over the field of a given slope may help you to understand a probable cause. Blistering of asphalt shingles caused by the product itself might appear uniform over the entire roof on all slopes independent of weather exposure. If only a few bundles of shingles were defective, say from improper manufacture or storage, asphalt shingle blistering may appear in shingles in a specific pattern on a roof subsequent to the application pattern of the shingles themselves as they were nailed to the roof.

We hired Richie Mueller from CD Strong in September to re-side our home. He ordered the wrong color (a color we never even considered) despite it being CLEARLY written on the contract. They offered us 7% ($500 off a $7300 bill) and refused to replace the siding. Horrible business practices! We overlooked a lot of issues (crew showing up even though the siding hadn’t been delivered, delays, leaving materials in our front lawn, not putting our shutters back up because Richie didn’t bring the right screws, etc). but the color is unforgivable. Buyer beware and stay away from Richie and CD Strong.
